Hajime Okamoto was born in Osaka, Japan. Influenced by his time on a cultural exchange program to the Jilin Province of China, he focuses on calligraphy, painting and zen concepts. He first displayed his art at a Chinese university exhibition in 1986 at the age of 44. Hajime created his whimsical cat characters to the rhythm of jazz. "The beat rhythm of jazz music in the 1960's is really similar to the life of cats, which is slow and free" says the artist. The Kabamaru series debuted in 1998 and has since become Okamoto's most famous works. The series is signed with a seal and a stylized form of his family's last name in Roman letters.
