North American Red Squirrel Holiday Cards

North American red squirrel by Mircea Costina

In its favorite habitat—coniferous forests—the North American red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) spends its winters squirreling about, rather than conserving energy by entering a state of torpor. This tree squirrel survives the cold months on its cache of seeds, cones, nuts, and fruits. And though it prefers to build weather-tight dreys in dense foliage, it will tunnel into deep snow in the most severe weather.
