In Haitian Oil Drum art, the designs are chalked out on flattened steel oil drums and then cut out with a mallet and chisel. Characteristics of these metal sculptures include areas that are concave or convex, intricate patterns are created by hammering in "bumps" of different heights.

Louis Juste Omiscar got an early start in the art of metal sculpture, working to flatten and sand barrels at the age of 8. He eventually began his apprenticeship in Serge Jolimeau's workshop, where he learned to create designs, do fine cut-work and detailing.  Design work now comes easily for him but he prefers making smaller pieces.
