La Catrina, Mexico's iconic Day of the Dead symbol, originated with La Calavera Catrina, a 1913 etching by artist and social critic José Guadalupe Posada; the drawing's title literally means "The well-dressed female skeleton." Catrina figures are often portrayed as flirtatious, as they are usually shown in their elegant Sunday best; that's the case here where she is wearing a coquettish dress and always with a wide-brimmed matching hat.
