Russian nesting dolls, also known as “matryoshka dolls,” serve as many things: home decorations, novelty collectibles, and even children’s toys. Matryoshka dolls symbolize the Russian matriarch, as mothers serve as the pillar of the Russian family structure. Dolls are made of wood from lime, birch, alder, and aspen, with the smallest doll carved first followed by additional dolls bigger than the last. Each piece is then hand painted, coated in a startch finish, and then nested into the largest of the dolls. Designs feature men and women in classical Russian attire.
Largest doll measures 9" x 4 1/2".
