A photographic journey into Santa Fe, New Mexico. I.M. Pei wrote, "Oles is a valued collaborator in search for truth in architecture." Considered one of the world's premier architectural illustrators, Paul Stevenson Oles has worked as independent architect, professor, author, and illustrator for over 40 years. This new book offers views of Santa Fe details, many of which may be under-noticed and perhaps lesser-appreciated, as he describes it. His presentation strategy is that each labeled pair of photographs appear on facing pages with backgrounds that are black on the left and white on the right. He hopes that this "verso-recto" (black-white) alternation will tend to relieve possible visual fatigue; this scheme actually creates a subtle "wake up" effect as each page is turned. Oles includes familiar haunts. such as the Five & Dime, the Pink Adobe, and Kaune's Market. Then there are the twin captures of the Trader Joe's facade. On one, "Winter Birds" lined-up pigeons seek warmth at the top of the roof parapet. On the other, "Summer Birds" pigeons perch shaded in a row atop the "Trader Joe's" letters below the parapet. It's a fun photo-pair, but this entire book is an enjoyable excursion for anyone who, like Oles, adores Santa Fe.
