Painted Filigree Heart Haitian Metal Sculpture

Oil drum art was developed in Haiti in the early 1950s by blacksmith Georges Liautaud. He began by creating metal crosses for the graves in the Croix-des-Bouquets cemetery, and was later encouraged by American teacher, DeWitt Peters, to expand the art form and begin creating decorative metal sculptures. Eventually, Liautaud took on a few male apprentices, and today, hundreds of men have continued with the craft. Creating oil drum art brings a steady income to a country that is plagued by political strife and lack of tourism.

Measures 17" x 17". Curls and swirls rolled together into this painted heart-shaped delight are really wonderful. Created by Stanley Brutus.
