Spider Woman's Gift - Nineteenth Century Diné Textiles

Diné textile and basketry weavings in the Museum of Indian Arts and Cultures collections created between the 1850s and the 1890s allow us to explore the oral history of Spider Woman and the early history of the Diné during this time.  The emphasis here is on how oral history impacts Native American cultures in general and in particular how Spider Woman influences Diné material culture.  Spider Woman's Gift presents two viewpoints on Diné weaving.  One is the perspective of a Diné weaver and museum educator, Joyce Begay-Foss; the other is that of anthropologist Marian Rodee, a well known Diné textile scholar.
