TheMelchors have been making their traditional black on white pottery in Santo Domingo New Mexico for over one hundred years. The process is the same as it was then, and five generations have carried the craft, the care, and the stories forward by the guidance of Clay Mother. Each handmade vessel reflects a living tradition, shaped with patience and painted with designs that carry meaning across time. Birds often appear in their work, especially the turkey, a symbol of importance for Pueblo people, along with doves and hummingbirds. Their grandmothers taught them to show the birds eating as a sign of abundance, and to include their tracks as a reminder of where they have been and where they are going. Around the pottery, the spirit line carries its own quiet blessing: for all good to come in, and all bad to go out. Look for the spirit exit in many of the images. These one-of-a-kind pieces are more than pottery; they are family knowledge, Pueblo tradition, and meaningful design brought together for the home.
